Wallace Park Sediment Pond Improvements

The City of Kenmore constructed the Wallace Park Sediment Pond improvements in 2006 to ease permitting challenges by creating a fish-friendly environment and to improve sediment management in Swamp Creek.

The work included the creation of a new habitat channel that bypasses the modified sediment pond. The habitat channel provides year-round fish habitat with woody debris and spawning gravel. Woody debris structures in the habitat channel provide stream habitat diversity and shade to keep the channel cool.

The modified sediment pond will still be used to collect sediment. The modified sediment pond can be isolated from the active habitat portion of Swamp Creek allowing sediment to be dredged from the facility without disrupting the habitat in the creek. The pond outlet (a weir under the footbridge) has been modified to reduce the likelihood of clogging which results in flooding the park and nearby private properties.
